Talking to Patients About the Best Contact Lens Option

I like to ask new contact lens patients what they desire from a contact lens. If they are going to be part-time wearers, or are youngsters, I advise going with a daily disposable since the lens is always fresh and the risk of complications is lower. If a daily disposable doesn't fit their lifestyle/goals, I prescribe a silicone hydrogel or a gas permeable lens. They are available as single vision, torics and multifocals, and can be worn as daily wear or extended/continuous wear.

Whatever the final lens, proper care is essential and the patient is instructed on the methods and reasons for complying with the care regimen. Patient education is the key.
