Fitting Tip of the Month

Ensuring Safety with Contact Lens Wear

Many patients are "non-compliant" because no one has ever taken the time to properly educate them. You can improve the compliance of your patients with simple, directed efforts by you and your staff. Here are some ideas to improve contact lens safety:
1. Offer disposable, planned replacement or conventional lens patients an opportunity to purchase a limited supply of daily disposables for things like swimming at a discounted price when purchasing a year's supply of their regular lenses.
2. Give all contact lens patients new lens cases anytime they come in.
3. Give patients literature which discusses "Safe Contact Lens Wear." The Institute for Eye Research has a nice one page, color handout found at www.ier.org.au as does the American Optometric Association (http://www.aoa.org/contact-lenses.xml).
4. Keep a copy of a lens material/solution compatibility chart in each exam room to show each patient which solutions they should use with their particular brand of lenses to ensure optimal eye health (this is VERY powerful).
With the history of contact lens solution recalls in our recent past, most patients are more willing to listen to tips on ensuring safe lens wear. This gives us, as providers, the opportunity to make professional recommendations that are more likely to be followed. Don't pass up this chance!
